Each year PADI and SEASPACE join forces to acknowledge an individual or entity actively engaged in working for marine environmental research, education and preservation. The award comes with a $1,000 honorarium to help further these essential goals. We are pleased to announce that the 2007 recipient is Tony Amos, Director of the Animal Rehabilitation Keep (ARK).
Located in Port Aransas, as part of the University of Texas' Marine Science Institute, at the ARK injured turtles receive veterinary care in special holding tanks. There's an aviary for birds, and other facilities for the various raccoons, possums, bats, rabbits, and other small mammals that check into the ARK from time to time. The goal is to rehabilitate these animals and return them to the wild. In the two-and-a-half decades that Tony Amos has been operating this mission, more than 700 sea turtles have been treated.
All of us at SEASPACE give special thanks to Tony Amos and his team for their wonderful work. Congratulations on being selected as the 2007 winner of the PADI Project Aware / SEASPACE Environmental Award!
